Honorary and Ghost Authorship
Scientific authorship is an important element of any paper. It provides credit to those who worked on the paper, as well as accountability if anything is found to be incorrect. Researchers want their name on papers to help them in their career, and often strive for the lead author credit. Although most projects simply list all contributors as authors, some choose to include an honorary or ghost author, two potentially problematic authorships.
What is Honorary Authorship?
Honorary authorship, also known as guest authorship, occurs when a person is listed as an author who has not provided any significant assistance to the study. Typically, this happens when a senior member or supervisor is listed on research undertaken in their department, even if he or she has not actually contributed to the study. Sometimes, honorary authorships are given in order to curry favor or enhance the credibility of the paper. Adding an author on an honorary basis can lead to problems. It takes some of the credit away from those who did the work, while giving credit and prestige to those who have done nothing. Additionally, if there is a problem found in the research, an honorary author might be seen as culpable.
What is Ghost Authorship?
Ghost authorship comes with the opposite problem: a person who has provided significant assistance is omitted as an author. One reason a person might be omitted is when they helped to write the paper but did not otherwise contribute to the research, in which that person is usually referred to as a ghostwriter. Students or technicians who help with the research might also be omitted, thereby not receiving any credit. Although these omissions do not provide adequate credit to those who contributed, they do not necessarily pose a problem. However, ghost authorship can be used wrongly, such as to obscure potential conflict of interest in research. An example would be omitting the name of an employee of a pharmaceutical company that assisted the research into a particular drug.
What are the Ethical Issues Involved?
There are important ethical issues to understand with both honorary and ghost authorship. Although both can be used for valid reasons, they are often used for foul purposes. Providing guest or honorary authorship just to try to make a paper more prestigious or legitimate undermines the work that has gone into the research, and could damage the findings in the long run. Ghost authorship is likewise problematic and unethical, as it does not provide credit where credit is due and can be used to manipulate the data and findings.
Guidelines for Authorship
Some journals and other organizations have started to implement strict guidelines to deter the authorship abuse caused by these types of authorship. For example, the journal Nature now includes descriptions of the contribution of each author to clarify exactly what everyone has done and shared with the research. Listing everyone who has helped on the project in an honest and open way will ensure that authorship is properly attributed. Limiting the use of honorary and ghost authorship, or abandoning the practice all together, will ensure the proper and ethical assigning of authorship to a paper.

Scientists just switched on the world’s largest ‘artificial sun’
Rob WaughYahoo News UKMarch 24, 2017
Scientists in Germany just switched on the world’s largest ‘artificial Sun’ for the first time – producing light 10,000 times more intense than natural sunlight on our planet.
The Synlight experiment in Jülich near Cologne foccuses 139 xenon spotlights on a single point – with a goal of generating climate-friendly fuel.
The machine is 45 feet high and 52 feed wide – and produces temperatures above 3,500 degrees Centigrade, hotter than a blast furnace.

Scientists hope that one day, the same technique could be used to produce hydrogen to fuel cars – in a carbon neutral way.
‘We’ve been testing it for the last two months, and this is the first public event,’ said research engineer Dmitrij Laaber.
‘The next step would be to get this reactor to a real solar plant, where it can be tested under real conditions. Our facility is mainly for testing of the components.’

This Buzzy Pink Drink Is Secretly Giving L.A. Girls Insanely Clear Skin
Amanda Montell by AMANDA MONTELL

I've been on board with rose water as a skincare product ever since discovering the moisturizing magic of Heritage's Rosewater & Glycerin toner. Hypnotic scent aside, when applied to the skin, rose water has a myriad of glow-inducing benefits. "Topically, rose water balances the pH of the skin, hydrates dry skin, aids in antiseptic, and fights injury due to aging and sun exposure," explains dermatologist Natasha Sandy, MD. Like I said, totally on board.
But the other week, a celebrity makeup artist told me in secret that she and all of her L.A. friends swear by drinking rose water too. "We mix it into our smoothies," she told me. Instantly, I was transfixed. So I picked the brains of three skincare experts, who confirmed that rose water is indeed one of humankind's oldest beauty ingestibles. The product, which is made from distilled rose oil, has been consumed by the gallon for millennia.
"Nutritionally, rose water contains vitamin A, B, C, and E, as well as flavonoids and other antioxidants," Sandy explains. And though there are few studies demonstrating definitive proof of rose water's benefits as a beauty beverage, people throughout history have depended on it to help with stress, digestion, mood, and inflammation, as well as gorgeous skin. "Since the side effects of drinking rose water are negligible, there may be no harm drinking until the evidence evolves to support current rosewater theories," adds Sandy.
So for the time being, bottoms up. Keep scrolling to learn more about the intriguing benefits and rituals of drinking rose water!
1. It reduces acne, rosacea, and eczema.
If inflammation is your problem, sipping on rose water can help. "Rose water is a great anti-inflammatory, which is good for reducing acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, skin redness, and psoriasis," explains celebrity facialist Ildi Pekar. The active inflammation-blasting ingredients in rose water are its terpenes and glycosides, says naturopathic doctor Gabrielle Francis.
For acne in particular, rose water offers double the healing effects, as "the essential oils in the rose have antimicrobial activity," adds Francis. The product also contains "geraniol and eugenol, which have antibacterial properties," says Sandy.
2. It makes the skin look hydrated and glowy.
If nothing else, nursing rose water all day will deeply hydrate your skin from the inside out. "Rose water plumps up the skin because is it hydrating and helps to restore water and fluids in dry skin," says Francis. To reap the hydrating benefits, Sandy and Pekar suggest infusing one of your eight recommended daily cups of water with rose.

3. It minimizes wrinkles and large pores.
Rose water also has incredible anti-aging effects. "Rose water reduces wrinkles and age spots due to its antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E and flavonoids," Francis explains. In fact, women have been turning to rose water as a source of youth for centuries. "In ancient Egypt, women used rose water to help reduce wrinkles and tighten the pores," says Pekar.
4. It's been used in Middle Eastern cultures for centuries.
Modern experts agree that there's really no downside to drinking rose water. But where did the custom originate?
According to our sources, the human species has a rich history of consuming rose water for beauty. "The tradition of edible or oral consumption of rose water goes back thousands of years, though it was primarily for flavor," Sandy explains. "Rose water, which is a by-product from the distillation of rose oil, was initially most popular in Persia [Iran], and then India and Europe."
As a beauty ingestible, rose water's origin story goes a little like this: "During an Imperial Royal wedding, a water fountain filled with rose petals developed tiny oil droplets," says Sandy. "These droplets were rose oil, and once the princess applied them to her skin, the tradition began." From then on, rose water was regarded as a symbol of beauty in Persia and was "often given as a gift," says Pekar.
Today, people all over the world consume rose water for its beauty benefits. "I have seen people drinking rose water for health and beauty on travels to Greece, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, and India," says Francis. "In Lebanon, where I am from, we have something called white tea, which is hot water with rose water—yum!"

5. It's easy to make yourself.
You can purchase rose water at many health-food stores and juice bars. We recommend Sakara's Beauty Water ($24), which also contains silica and 72 trace minerals. "Just be on the look out for added sugar and how much is added," says Sandy.
Better yet, you can easily make your own rose water at home, which our experts highly recommend. "If you make it yourself, you can refrigerate it and use it for up to one week," says Pekar.
Here is Francis's recipe for how to make your own drinkable rose water:
1. Remove the petals from a fresh rose. Be sure to clean the rose petals with a fruit or vegetable wash (like this one from The Honest Company) to be sure the pesticides and insects are gone.
2. Put several rose petals in a glass jar of water and let them steep for six hours in the sun. This makes a gentle rose water that is good to drink.
3. Drink one glass per day for maximum benefits, which will be noticed in one week.

17 ways to become a more interesting person
Shana Lebowitz
Mar. 14, 2017, 11:31 AM 73,254
Everyone has the potential to be interesting.
You don't have to be a billionaire, or a CEO, or an astronaut to hold people's attention — you can just be you.
It's a question of knowing how to highlight the traits that make you different from the person next to you.
Over on Quora, dozens of people have answered the question, "How do I become a more interesting person?" with insights based on their own experience. We sifted through their responses and pinpointed the most practical advice.
Read on for ways to convince other people — and more importantly, yourself — that you're a fascinating human being.
1. Develop new skills
Ensure that other people find you interesting by making yourself helpful in any situation. That's why Quora user Anthony N. Lee suggests learning as many useful skills as you can, from web design to sewing.
That way, you'll always be the go-to person, whether a friend needs to create a website for her new business or a blanket for her baby niece.
2. Be curious
One way to ensure that you're not interesting is by closing yourself off to differing opinions and viewpoints. Instead, you should actively seek out new ideas and experiences that will change the way you think and feel.
Sudhir Desai advocates being a "lifelong learner." He writes: "Keep an open mind, be curious. Allow for a complex world with multiple interpretations. Learn things to deepen and broaden your perspectives."
3. Learn how to tell a good story
Maybe you've amassed a ton of information and experiences — but if you can't communicate them to other people, you're sunk.
That's why Marcus Geduld says you should learn how to be a storyteller: "You don't just dump whatever is on your mind into the conversation; you purposefully shape it to make it interesting. … Start thinking of your life as a gift you can give to others. Wrap it in the finest paper you can find."
Geduld says that means you need to learn how to read your audience to see how long they'll be able to pay attention and tease your listeners with clues to the end of the story.
Interestingly, recent research found that men who can tell a good story are also seen as more attractive by women. The study authors say that's possibly because skilled storytellers may seem better positioned to influence others or gain authority.
4. Have three good stories ready to share
Knowing how to tell a story spontaneously is a handy skill — but if you're nervous about that, arm yourself with a few personal anecdotes you can use to liven up an otherwise dull interaction.
Writes Devesh: "Comedians don't just talk about anything when they're onstage. They have their act rehearsed. You don't just trot into a job interview and say whatever's on your mind. Always have three good stories on hand that reliably entertain, inform, or engage."

5. Listen and show compassion
A striking number of Quora users mentioned that one way to seem interesting is to be interested in others.
This idea was popularized by Dale Carnegie in his 1936 bestseller "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Carnegie wrote: "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."
Writes Quentin Hardy, a Googler and former editor for The New York Times: "Listen carefully to others, and try with some compassion to understand their motives and actions. Few of us are really good at this. Everyone becomes nearly infinite in their experience of life, if we listen to them with enough imagination. Working that out grows ourselves. Wondering if you're wrong helps, too."
6. Ask good questions
At a party, you don't need to say much about yourself for people to believe you're interesting. Instead, engage them in deep conversation about their lifestyle.
"Ask thoughtful (not prying) questions, as needed, about them and their interests and priorities," says Stephanie Vardavas. "Really listen to the answers. Follow up with more thoughtful discussion and necessary questions (again, not prying). By the end of the evening they will remember you as one of the most interesting people they ever met."
Don't be embarrassed to ask seemingly simple questions, either. As Evan Ratliff, a journalist who's written for publications including The New Yorker, told Fast Company: "There's typically no point in pretending you know something when you don't. As a reporter the goal is to gather information, not to impress your subjects. You'd think it would be different in business, but it's not."
By asking those simple questions, you may end up impressing your new acquaintances, anyway.
7. Say what you think
Kat Li says people who don't opine on or disagree with anything can be boring.
"You feel like you can't really ever have a conversation with them," she writes. "You should try to say what you really think about some things, even if other people won't like it."
8. Follow your interests
Instead of learning about a ton of dull topics just for the sake of being knowledgeable, pursue areas that you actually find stimulating. That way, you'll sound animated and engaging when describing them to other people.
"I don't think it's as much a matter of trying to be interesting as much as it is naturally following what you enjoy, being an avid student and collector of information that interests and excites you," writes Renee Nay.
guy reading on a couch books

9. Read a lot
If you have the time and money to travel the world, great. But even if you don't, you can still learn about different cultures and historical periods by reading everything you can get your hands on.
Books, blogs, periodicals — expose yourself to as many new stories and ideas as possible.
Based on a review of the past decade of research on the psychological effects of reading fiction, Keith Oatley told The Washington Post: "People who read more fiction were better at empathy and understanding others."
"Read a lot — it opens up multiple new worlds to us," says Chaitra Murlidhar.
10. Display a sense of humor
Awdesh Singh suggests developing a sense of humor in your interactions with others. "Learn to see the lighter side of the life," he writes, "and develop a habit to be happy even in your failings."
Bonus if you're trying to impress a date: Research suggests men who are funny are perceived by women as more attractive, possibly because they seem more intelligent.
11. Spend time with other interesting people
Singh adds that the company you keep influences your own personality. "If you are in the company of boring people, disgruntled people or serious people, you are likely to become like them very soon," he says. "The same is true when you have the company of interesting people."
Consider joining a Meetup or another group of people who are motivated to pursue their interests and passions.
12. Dig deep into one of your interests
You might be tempted to become a dabbler in many fields, developing a little bit of knowledge about everything. Instead, consider knowing a lot about one topic and flaunting your expertise in that area.
April Fonti says she finds people interesting when they "really pursue one thing with great intensity and depth over a long period of time. They could be very successful scientists or just quiet loners. It doesn't matter."
improv class

13. Take an improv class
Comedian Bill Connolly told Fast Company that practicing the art of improvisation can help improve your communication skills in daily life. One reason why is that it makes you a better listener, focusing on what the other person is saying instead of what you're going to say next.
Ken Gregg says:
"Even if you're shy and have no intention of ever performing publicly, comedy improv will loosen you up, help you 'think faster,' re-learn how to be playful (something most adults have lost), and make you feel more comfortable making a fool of yourself in front of other people (a life skill that comes in handy frequently). It can open you up and help you become more engaged when interacting with other people."
14. Be unconventional
Evan Asano says being interesting comes down to being in some way different from everyone else.
He writes: "A friend of mine after college did something no one's ever done before (at least known). He circumambulated Martha's Vineyard via its beach/shore. It only took a couple days and some camping gear. 20 years later he still tells the story."
Still, not everyone has the resources or the motivation to set off on a record-breaking camping trip right now. So think about the unusual experiences you've already had. Maybe you've lived in a foreign country; maybe you sell art projects as a side gig; maybe you grew up with 10 siblings. There's definitely something, so keep digging.
15. Embrace your weirdness
"We all have quirks," writes Del Singh. "It is part of our being. Interesting people unleash their inner weirdness."
Dressing, speaking, and acting like everyone else can be kind of boring — we're not in junior high school anymore. So let your freak flag fly, and do it with confidence.
16. Open up to people
Danielle Lan shares a personal story, the moral of which is that no one will know how interesting you are unless you tell them:
"My husband has been described as boring. He's really a very fascinating man, with all his quirks and hobbies. The problem is he never shares with his coworkers or acquaintances.
"When asked 'How was your weekend?' his response is usually, 'Fine'. In fact he probably took part in a huge raid in his favorite MMO [massively multiplayer online game] before watching a new movie and finishing an interesting book. But he won't share that with just anyone.
"To be what people perceive as interesting you have to share. That also means you have to have things to share. It's a rare person who literally does absolutely nothing and has absolutely no opinion on any given topic. My advice is to open up."
Indeed, research suggests that people like each other better when they each share something personal, as opposed to when only one person does.
17. Run with a different crowd
Perhaps the real reason you don't feel interesting is because you're spending time with people who don't appreciate you. In that case, you should find a different community who understands how much you have to offer.
Writes Travis Biziorek: "Challenge yourself to meet new people, hang out with a different crowd, and experience people with different outlooks and views on life. I promise you'll find people that interest you and those that find you fascinating."

I hate when I read in the comments how everybody says negative things about the Russians, and the Americans, the Japanese, whoever. People need to start understanding that we're all human beings and we should not be punished or killed because of our governments and their lack of concern for our safety and for our lives. It's the common men & women that pays the price, no matter what country you come from. We need to learn to come together as the human race, before it's too late. And to stop playing into and allowing our government to manipulate the way we think and view each other. 🙈 🙉 🙊

Very sad:( what a butiful district. Chernobyl used to be called the workers paradise. Everything was there, swimming pools, schools, hospitals, apartments jobs, all within walking distance. Everyone new each other. Amazing to see the family photos in the apartment blocks. It looks like everybody just left without packing. Love seeing the old soviet school books & pictures of lenin, reminded me of the pictures my father took when he was lucky enough to visit the Soviet Union in the 1980's. Amazing part of history.

Dafuq are you talking about? Chernobyl is the way worse than Fukushima. Yes, Fukushima had problems with multiple reactors, but these reactors did not get that crazy out of control as the one in Chernobyl did. Still, if you look at pics of Fukushima, you can see that all three reactors still have their protection mantles around them. The same thing cant be said about the Chernobyl reactor, that got out of control. Durin the Chernobyl accident, the whole reacto esploded. It did not esplode like the one in Fukushima, but IT DID LITERALLY ESPLODE.The esplosion in Fukushima was caused by CO2 and the esplosion DID NOT destroy the core-protection-mantle. The core in Chernobyl was TOTALLY free'd and it even started to burn. If you know a little about nuclear energy, you'd know that burning reactor cores are the worst thing that can happen. The radioactive smoke allows radioactive material to spread over the whole world.

What a beautiful and haunting video. Chernobyl has always fascinated me, and in my eyes it stands as a reminder that, as the human race, we are playing with fire and constantly teetering on the edge of destruction of both ourselves & this beautiful planet we inhabit.

There's some kind of raw nostalgic beauty in it all. It's an abandoned city, lost in a time frame that no longer exists anywhere else, giving it it's uniqueness and history. No one saw it go. They were all sleeping when the nightmare snuck out and became reality. It's definitely an interesting story I suppose.ㄟ(° ~ °)ㄏ

+firefox5926 I prefer Thermal Flux reactors because that's what I'm used to and I think it is better to have the added layer of safety provided by a reactor being designed not to be critical on prompt neutrons alone.
I think Lead Fast Reactors (LFRs) would be a harder sell to the public than MSRs like LFTR, because EVERYONE knows lead is toxic & radioactive lead would send the environmental wackos through the roof.

Well, they were probably misinformed by their instruments, as always: it's very easy to call them idiots in hindsight. The reason that they turned it off was probably because they feared that it was already hot enough for the Zirconium container to react with water, producing an explosive buildup of Hydrogen gas. So the conundrum was probably to either cool it with water, or cut off the potential source of explosive hydrogen, and basic human psychology tells us that they would have feared the explosion more, so it would have seemed the appropriate choice.

We need to clear up a few mistakes/misleading “facts”
Contrary to anti-nuclear propaganda:
1. Three Mile Island was not co-producing weapons-grade plutonium.
2. There was no chance/risk of such a meltdown to develop into a nuclear explosion.
3. The containment showed it could stand up to the requirements.
4. There was no harm to people from radiation.
5. The economic loos were very limited COMPARED TO what mankind lost through anti-nuclear and subsequent extra greenhouse gasses.
If the climate collapses, we can blame Greenpeace and other scaremongers.

In response to your argument involving this article (http://havacuppahemlock1.blogspot.com/2014/04/children-of-chernobyl-effects-of.html) specifically the line: "HAVE
YOU SPOKEN TO A MILITARY FAMILY WHOSE CHILD IS DYING BECAUSE OF DAD'S
EXPOSURE IN IRAQ TO DEPLETED URANIUM, AND DAD WILL SOON SUCCUMB TO THAT
AS WELL?" that line would mean that all M1 Abrams crew members and their children are dying. I know that this is BS because I have a few good friends who know Iraq War cavalrymen who drove M1 Abrams tanks and are just fine and whose children do not have birth defects. If you want to demonize radiation (which IS harmful) you must compare deaths and birth defect incidences from radiation to deaths and birth defect incidences from chemical or biological agents

+Steven Van Caenegem YT never sent your question and now I just ran across it.Anyway I will answer it.If any part of Three Mile Island detected a high level of radiation on the Geiger counters that the men used that worked there then The Secret Service would prevent President Carter from going.President Carter was a nuclear trained submarine officer. If you like to read some really great books then President Carter is the man for you.He at last count had 32 books that were wrote by him! No ghost writers. These books are like 300 to 600 pages long and I read one at my local library, took me all week every day they opened. It seems like I can concentrate better at the library ( plus my home central air conditioning took the entire week to fix ) I was going to give you the name of the book but when you look at all of the book covers its hard to figure out which one is correct.Anyway you want the one where he is a young US Navy Nuclear Submarine Officer. He tells of how just him and his crew were able to dismantle the nuclear engine, piece by piece, avoid the major radiation ( Quite a job because one false move would mean your life).Great Read, you would love it.Some people make fun of the way he talks but he is a truly gifted man.If you can't find his book about his Navy career then just in case I will continue and see if I have better luck.Get back to me and maybe I will have found it.

Every year more than 2,000 people have died in the coal mines and an unknown number from air pollution.
Now let us add up the numbers from 1979 and compare to what we speak so much about.
Unless you can die from fear, nuclear is more safe than any other way of creating power.

Because what happened in reactor number 4 at Chernobyl is the benchmark for nuclear danger and what can come from mishandling it. Soviet carelessness was of course the major cause, but regardless, we haven't seen a disaster that bad since what happened at Fukushima.

I like how nuclear power is portrayed as the bad guy... when in fact its not that nuclear power is bad its the human error and the lack of knowledgeable information that is being overlooked here.. Every single nuclear disaster can be linked to human error.... remove the human aspect and let the computer do its job and this wont be a problem anymore. remove that laziness and the Cutting corners and this wont happen. Whats the old saying good works not cheap and cheap works not good.

And this just shows the safety this building. An incident occurred, and the bio-containment vessel of the reactor did it's job. The people around TMI were on average exposed to the amount of radiation a person would receive from eating 800 banana's or flying from New York to Los Angles and back again or 1/5 a mammogram or 8 normal days of radiation exposure just living you're life. Or 1/8000th the smallest yearly dose over 1 year for 10 years that has ever been linked to cancer.

President Carter needed to do more than make a short speech telling people to go home. He needed to EXPLAIN the things I said before in DETAIL. If he explained it properly, we wouldn't have the situation we have where there still have been no new reactors built in the United States since 1986.

+Eddie Hayes That was one speech. You cannot educate the public with one 47 minute speech, especially since at the time we still didn't have all the facts about what exactly happened, and any sort of cause analysis. If that 47 minute speech was enough, then we would have had nuclear reactors licensed, built and brought online since 1986.

SEEING THE FOREST AND THE TREES
March 21, 2016
The day I am writing this is the Spring Equinox, the moment of balance between daylight and darkness. And it’s a good day here in the Northern Hemisphere because the light force is with us, increasing every minute, while the dark side is losing its power.
This is also International Forest Day. While the world’s forests are still being destroyed too fast, there is actually something to celebrate this year. The title of This Planet’s latest episode, “When a Tree Burns in the Forest,” may not sound like good news, but some good things are happening.
This video explores the “Global Forest Watch” tool launched by the World Resources Institute (WRI) to track forest health and destruction (full disclosure: my nephew works at WRI). Global Forest Watch is an app you can download to your phone or computer, that uses satellite monitoring data, allowing:
“anyone to create custom maps, analyze forest trends, subscribe to alerts, or download data for their local area or the entire world. Users can also contribute to GFW by sharing data and stories from the ground via GFW’s crowdsourcing tools, blogs, and discussion groups.”
Besides Global Forest Watch, there is other good forest news this year. But let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Some of it you already know: rainforests are being cut down, and their unique and irreplaceable ecosystems are rapidly disappearing. 50% of the world’s forests have been destroyed or degraded, with only 15% intact .
Joe DeSousa
Joe DeSousa
The bad news you may not know is that the U.S. Congress has decided that burning trees for electric power is good for the environment. The Washington Post reports that
“A group of forest scientists, ecologists and climate researchers has sent a strongly worded letter to the U.S. Senate, arguing that pending bipartisan energy legislation incorrectly claims that burning trees for energy is carbon neutral.
“’Legislating scientific facts is never a good idea, but is especially bad when the “facts” are incorrect,’ say the researchers, led by Phil Duffy, president of the Woods Hole Research Center.”
That was in February. The amendment is now part of the legislation – happy International Forest Day!
But I promised good news, and here it is: trees “inhale” carbon dioxide much as we inhale oxygen, and a new study published in Nature reports that when forests get used to increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, they adjust quite well, absorbing more than they had previously. In other words, they help compensate for our unceasing atmospheric pollution.
You may have noticed that this bit of good news, like the Global Forest Watch tracker, is only “good” in so far as it offsets the terrible bad news about forest destruction. Or, as Sean DeWitt of WRI puts it in our video story:
Ever wonder if your memory loss is a part of growing old? Let me share a short story:
This story is about Arnold. Arnold has been working for 45 years. He grew up in a low-income family, and when he was young he had to work several jobs to put food on his table. When he got to his 30s he was able to save enough money to put up his own company. Times were hard in the beginning and he didn’t have any money, but he persevered and was able to grow the company to provide for his family. Currently, Arnold is an old and accomplished man. He has his wife, children, and grandchildren plus a profitable company which his grandchildren run.
Arnold is currently retired and should be enjoying the fruits of his labor. The only problem is, he can’t remember anything. He struggles to remember doing something he did earlier or the names and faces of his loved ones. The story of Arnold is not an uncommon one, it’s has become so common that we associate old age with a fading memory. Most of us have accepted the fact that our memory has a self-erasing calendar as we grow old.
Perhaps you know someone like Arnold or you have a loved one who is suffering from memory loss, or worse Alzheimers. What I’d like to share is that memory loss can be prevented, reversed and should NOT be part of growing old. Similar to past articles, the best way we can protect ourselves from mental disorders and memory loss is to understand the root cause. A lot of the information below is based on the book Power Foods For The Brain by Dr. Neal Barnard, (Yes, he also wrote the book Reversing and Preventing Diabetes.) I highly recommend everyone pick up this book if you want to learn more about memory loss, Alzheimer’s, dementia, etc. and how you can prevent them. Here are 9 Things About Memory Loss and Alzheimer’s You Need To Know.
Snap 2014-03-10 at 12.15.46
# 1 Heavy metals build-up in the brain is one of the main causes of mental disorders and memory loss.
Did you know that researchers found plaque within the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia? Upon further investigation, the plaque found had high amounts of copper, iron, and zinc. We get these minerals from the food we eat as it is essential for building enzymes and other healthy functions. In reality, these minerals or “metals” are highly unstable. Take for example a copper coin, this bright shiny coin soon darkens and rusts as does other metals. This is called oxidation, and it causes havoc to our brain. When the metals we consume begin to oxidize inside our brain it causes free radicals to form which then attack our brain cells.1 Imagine that exact copper coin beginning to rust inside our brain, not very pleasant, but this is exactly what happens when we consume heavy metals.
Copper coins. One is rusted and the other ones are new.
#2 Metals in food such as iron, copper, and zinc can contribute to heavy metal build-up in the brain.
So are these metals bad for us? But these are minerals! That’s what I thought, too. Let us take iron as an example. We were always told that iron is supposed to be good and essential to the body, so what’s the problem? The key is to understand the difference between the two types of iron– non-heme iron and heme iron. Non-heme iron is found from dark green leafy vegetables, beans, and other plant-based foods. Nonheme iron has a very special function in where it auto-regulates its consumption. Meaning, it becomes extremely absorbable if you are low on iron, and at the same time, if you have plenty of iron in your blood stream, your body is able to lower the absorption, ensuring you only get the adequate amount.
The problem is when we consume a lot of the other type of iron, which is the heme iron. Heme iron is difficult for the body to regulate, and we cannot turn down the absorption even if we already have a lot of iron in our system. As Dr. Barnard puts it, it’s like an uninvited guest barging into your party that you can’t get rid of.
Where do we get heme iron? Heme iron is mostly found in animal protein and artificial vitamins. Take for example a cow who gets iron from grass, as Dr. Barnard explains in his book. When we eat the cow, the iron we consume is super concentrated and it ends up being more than we need. For other minerals, plant-based sources have a natural substance called phytic acid which limits the absorption of copper and zinc, thus, making sure we do not over consume them. 2 Metals such as copper, iron, and zinc are essential to the body but when we overconsume them, it can have a toxic effect in our brain.3
How much of these minerals do we really need? For copper, just .9 milligrams per day for men and women, iron is 8 milligrams per day for adult men and for women over fifty and 18 milligrams for women between nineteen and fifty. Zinc, 11 milligrams per day for men and 8 milligrams per day for women. Check out the graph below showing the rates of memory loss and Alzheimer’s corresponding to heavy metals in the body. As you can see those who average 2.75 milligrams per day did not do so well in terms of cognitive health. 9,000 people volunteered for the Chicago Health and Aging Project, and the study showed that the participants who have a fair amount of copper along with saturated fat from animal products showed loss in mental function that was equivalent to extra nineteen years of aging.4

#3 It would be best to check our multivitamins for minerals as they can lead to heavy metal build up. These minerals are iron, copper, aluminum, etc.
According to Dr. Neal Barnard, we have to be careful with the choice of our multivitamin supplement. Most multivitamin supplements contain the minerals iron, copper, and zinc. As we learned earlier, over-consuming minerals can have negative effects on our brain. Most vitamins for the elderly already exclude iron but still include copper and zinc, so it would be wise to choose a supplement without minerals and containing only vitamins. It would also be wise to check the labels of antacids and use only aluminum-free versions. Several antacids have aluminum hydroxide that can deliver thousand times worth of aluminum than what the body needs, wrecking havoc in the brain. All of these minerals can be found from whole food sources and we have no need to get them from artificial supplements.

Whole food plant-based sources such as dark leafy greens including spinach, pechay, beans, nuts, whole grains, sesame seeds and mushrooms are high in copper, iron, and zinc. Obtaining minerals from whole food sources also ensures that we won’t consume excess heavy metals due to plants’ natural auto-regulating absorption of them.
#4 Check if your cookware has certain metals on their cooking surface. These metals can easily oxidize and build up in our brain.
A big contributor to the heavy metals build-up in the brain is the cookware we use every day. If possible, request for the cookware that is free of copper and iron on their cooking surfaces. Avoid as well aluminum cans such as those used in sodas. Although these cans have a lining to prevent the aluminum from seeping into the soda, it is still not entirely effective, as the longer the soda sits in the can, the more aluminum may pass into it.

#5 Consuming a diet rich in cholesterol and saturated fats not only threatens our heart’s health but also our brain’s health.
Saturated fat typically from animal protein, dairy, and hydrogenated oils causes our cholesterol level to rise. When cholesterol level rises, plaques begin to form in our heart’ arteries. These arteries connect the heart and the brain and when the plaque begins to form, it gradually pinches off the supply of blood to the brain. A failure in the blood supply of the brain is one of the main causes of stroke, which is one of the leading causes of memory loss. Cholesterol also increases beta-amyloid, which is a compound that ends up as beta-amyloid plaques that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
You may or may not have heard of the dreaded Alzheimer gene which is the APOE e4 gene. Those who have the APE e4 gene of Alzheimer’s are at a high risk when consuming a high cholesterol diet as people with this gene absorb more cholesterol easily than people without. The cholesterol carried by the APOE-e4 gene encourages the production of beta-amyloid, which in turn is aggravated by the heavy metals consumed in the diet thus, making the free radicals and plaques that destroy brain cells. 5 In the Chicago project, researchers found out that saturated fat is harmful all by itself. Over a four-year period, people who got around 25 g of fat each day had at least twice the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.6

#6 Several medications such as cholesterol-lowering drugs have been found to have direct effect on memory
Statin or cholesterol-lowering drugs have been found to have negative effects on memory. In a study made by the University of California at San Diego, 171 cases of people were reported with cognitive problems while taking statin. In 90 percent of the cases, stopping the cholesterol-lowering drug fixed the problem. People were mistakenly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but after removing the cholesterol-lowering drug, the diagnosis did not apply anymore. Some resumed the cholesterol-lowering drug and found that memory loss symptoms returned each time. The higher the dose of the cholesterol drug, the more likely the people in the test were found to have cognitive problems. The cognitive problems associated with the study were usually confusion, disorientation, and memory gaps.7
#7 Other sources of heavy metals such as antiperspirants can be a contributor to heavy metal build up in the brain
Common antiperspirants contain aluminum that can unsuspectingly pass through your skin and into your bloodstream. Check your antiperspirant’s ingredients list to see if it is aluminum or alum free. Check as well your skin care items for metals such as aluminum, copper, zinc, and iron.

#8 Incorporate physical and mental exercises for mental health. Just light and simple aerobic exercise can do wonders for your mental health. With aerobic exercise, blood flow is stimulated towards the brain. Other activities like brisk walking, biking, light jogging or any aerobic endeavor stimulate oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Another benefit when your heart gets pumping is that new connections and brain synapses grow between brain cells. This is even true for people with the APOE e4 gene. 8 Mental exercises such as learning a new language or cognitive challenges have been shown to build brain circuits that enhance the cognitive reserve. Even simple activities such as reading a newspaper article or working a crossword puzzle are known to activate the brain neurons and get them firing. 9
#9 Incorporate a plant-based diet or eat more plant-based foods for peak mental health.
Oftentimes, people mistake that by exercising, one can indulge in toxic foods and solve all of their health problems. The reality is you can’t exercise cholesterol or heavy metals away. Let exercise add to the benefits of eating healthy rather than be a replacement. Eating a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to have peak mental health as we grow old. Well, what if you happen to have to APOE-e4 Alzheimer’s gene for example? According to Dr. Neal Barnard, if you can adopt a plant-based diet or consume more plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, your body will produce less cholesterol, your absorption of heavy metals would diminish, and your risk would fall despite having the genes that would predispose you to have Alzheimer’s or other mental disorders. 10
For optimum mental health, start the habit of drinking a glass of green smoothie every day.
There you have it, I hope this article showed a clear glimpse on what causes memory loss and mental disorders. By understanding what causes it, we can avoid it and never miss a memory in our lives. The best way for long-lasting optimum mental health or reverse mental disorders is to consume more plant-based foods or adopt a plant-based diet. At the same time, incorporate a holistic approach by avoiding heavy metals in cookware, personal care, and in food. Finally, exercise the mind as well as the body to supplement the diet.
The topic of mental heath and Alzheimer’s is huge and very detailed so I highly suggest that if you’re interested in exploring the details of the information, go get the book of Dr. Neal Barnard Power Foods For The Brain. You can also hear him talk about it in this video. Feel free to share the article if you found useful or leave a comment in the section below.

If the mixed nitric acid and table salt can be readily dissolved gold. This is my new method is well suited for the extraction of gold at home! If you have problems with the acquisition of hydrochloric acid, then the option. But I will not stop at this, too, in mind there is an interesting idea. And what? You will see in future releases. And the cost of this method is quite acceptable option, and also the effectiveness of any no way inferior to the king. My experience shows that the mixture is not necessarily much warm enough to expose to the sun and wait. During the summer, missing one day dissolve all the minerals that are contained in the rocks or in any potential ore.

@PYTHAGORAS101 To be honest the only thing I disagree of all that you have said is when you personally attack ones mental state. I say that because how are you able to determine how ones mind is like and how they are not able to make clear decision, judgments or have any real communications skills? one's mental state as you explained clouded by doubt is the reason, as I like to say "for one to know one must be one", and would you say that you are also clouded by doubt are not? you said "absence of doubt is a sign of a confident mind" but isn't that a self-contradiction? because confidence would had been you stating your beliefs and not why you believe otherwise by telling others the reason they do not have the same beliefs as you because they are brainwashed. That right there says you had your doubts that lead you to seek the answers of all that you doubt to be true. So instead of me researching whether or not NASA has brain washed I and many people all over the world in tricking us to believe that the moon is some shiny plate in the sky, and that the stars are just little lights in the sky. I myself have not been to outer space and doubt you had as well so why not have much more productive debate in all that does exist as to the why's and why not's! instead of a destructive conversation of who's smarter, teasing one's mental state and what they are capable of in thinking or doing, surely a conversation would put one in a mental state as you described where one's mind would be clouded in doubt. Damn can everyone stop for a sec and gather your thoughts I agree that instead of telling each other what to believe and not, I agree that hearing each others beliefs and expressing ours we would be less doubtful and more so confident in finding the truth in all that is. Sorry to burst anyone's Bubble, but this guy took existing Gold that was in the Stone he crushed and extracted it on an Atomic level using Chemistry. If anyone here is thinking of trying this at Home, please, do your Research, and make sure you have the proper P.P.E.(Personal Protective Equipment). Doing this kind of Chemistry is DANGEROUS! One misstep, and you're life may be over a bit earlier then you expected. So please, use extreme caution.

+gravesoldier y. Fuzz is the uncertain one...... American Tramp and Underworld Slang, published in 1931, suggests that "Fuzz" was derived from "fuss," meaning that the cops were "fussy" over trifles......"Fuzz" might also have come from the beards worn by early police officers.... Before you ask. "Size 9s" comes from the fact that original UK police uniforms included a pair of size 9 shoes and "Wooden Tops" refers to the original police helmets. The last term is mainly used by the police themselves to describe officers who have not reached the rank of detective, but since traffic police can not wear a helmet on duty, it has become a bit misleading. PS, it is our daughter who is the London police officer. lol.

Eli Z i think this would be easiest because it is frustrating not having equipment or people willing to share knowledge... the rock I find has other metals as well like iron copper silver platinum pirite. domestic amidst quartz. I think this would be the way to go for me because I just collect the rock, pulverize then chemically isolate.

National Geographic: America's Money Vault
Documentary film AMERICA'S MONEY VAULT
FIRST LOOK Inside the FEDERAL RESERVE, USD, CASH, GOLD monetary SYSTEM - Americas Money Vault, National Geographic Full Episode PART 1
For the first time, National Geographic takes you inside the heart of the money machine to places that you're not allowed to bring a camera ...straight into the vaults of some of the world's largest stashes of what you want, need and bust your butt to get: Money.
Hidden deep under the streets of New York City, hundreds of billion dollars in gold bars are tucked away in a bunker that is anchored to the bedrock of Manhattan Island itself.
In the latest in a string of high-profile hacking disclosures, the Federal Reserve confirmed on Wednesday that one of its websites was broken into by cyber hackers in a breach that reportedly leaked the contact information of thousands of bankers.
While the central bank said the incident didn't "affect critical operations" of the Federal Reserve System, the disclosure is sure to fuel concerns about the cyber security of government websites and critical financial infrastructure.
The Fed hack appears to be tied to an Anonymous group that published on Twitter the credentials of more than 4,000 commercial bankers early Monday morning. The group, Operation Last Resort, said it received the documents "via the FED."
Call it the Rick Perry gold rush: The governor wants to bring the state's gold reserves back from a New York vault to Texas.
And he may have legislative support to do it. Freshman Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, R-Southlake, is carrying a bill that would establish the Texas Bullion Depository, a secure state-based bank to house $1 billion worth of gold bars owned by the University of Texas Investment Management Co., or UTIMCO, and stored by the Federal Reserve.
remaining alternative to Congress raising the nation's borrowing limit, which would utilize a loophole in federal law to mint a $1 trillion coin to be deposited in the Federal Reserve and ensure the federal government could pay all bills and debt obligations.

You can thank the reckless money printing that the Federal Reserve has been doing for the incredible bull market that we have seen in recent months. When the Federal Reserve does more "quantitative easing", it is the financial markets that benefit the most. The Dow and the S&P 500 have both hit levels not seen since 2007 this month, and many analysts are projecting that 2013 will be a banner year for stocks. But is a rising stock market really a sign that the overall economy is rapidly improving as many are suggesting? Of course not. Just because the Federal Reserve has inflated another false stock market bubble Barack Obama has been president, 40 percent of all American workers are making $20,000 a year or less, median household income has declined for four years in a row, and poverty in the United States is absolutely exploding. So quantitative easing has definitely not made things better for the middle class. But all of the money printing that the Fed has been doing has worked out wonderfully for Wall Street. Profits are soaring at Goldman Sachs and luxury estates in the Hamptons are selling briskly. Unfortunately, this is how things work in America these days. Our "leaders" seem far more concerned with the welfare of Wall Street than they do about the welfare of the American people. When things get rocky, their first priority always seems to be to do whatever it takes to pump up the financial markets Show less

5 Good Bacteria Strains That You Should Watch Out For
There’s no shortage of probiotic products on the market today that contain many different strains of good bacteria. With so many to choose from, how do you know which ones are best for you?
First, you need to know that different probiotic bacterial strains support different functions in your body: no two strains are exactly alike. Depending on the strain, you may already have certain concentrations of that probiotic strain in various parts of your digestive tract. Probiotic strains work together with each other, so you want a probiotic product with an assortment of beneficial strains, not just a small handful.
Also understand that not all probiotic strains do an equal job of supporting your health. Not all strains do a good job of colonizing your gut, which is probably the main reason for taking a probiotic supplement. Probiotic strains vary widely; some support your immune and overall health better than others.*
Just because a probiotic contains high amounts of CFUs, or numbers of colonizing units of good bacteria, if the strains of probiotics aren’t beneficial strains, you may not benefit as much as you’d hoped.
Selecting the Best Probiotic Strains for You
Depending on the condition of your gut flora and the bacterial strains that already live there (and the beneficial strains you may be missing), you can choose the strains best for you.
There’s a handful of probiotic strains that I believe belong in any good probiotic supplement. I consider them foundational probiotic bacterial strains because of their far-reaching potential benefits for most people.
I suggest you look for these strains when shopping for a probiotic supplement. My Complete Probiotics contains all five of these strains and five additional good bacteria strains to support health.*
Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1
DDS-1 is a patented strain of L. acidophilus that has decades of research behind it. Truly a “super strain” probiotic, it’s a strain of human origin, and because of that, it’s highly adaptable to your gastrointestinal tract.
Human, animal, and in vitro research shows it:
Supports a healthy balance of good bacteria to bad bacteria*
Supports healthy immune function*
Helps maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range*
Produces vitamins in your gut: B6, B12, and folic acid*
Produces lactase, which may help with digestion of dairy products*
DDS-1 is both acid resistant and bile resistant, which means it can better withstand the harsh environment of your stomach’s acidity and your intestine’s bile salts. Research shows it grows and thrives in the intestines.
Researchers believe DDS-1 produces a substance that may help balance the bacteria in your gut, possibly by lowering your colon’s pH. Additionally, it can latch onto your intestine’s epithelium cells and help crowd out the bad strains of bacteria. Its potential benefit for your cholesterol levels comes from its ability to produce short-chain fatty acids that may impact cholesterol production.*
Compared to regular strains of L. acidophilus, DDS-1 produces more lactic acid and more of the enzyme that breaks down lactose into a simple sugar that can be metabolized for energy.
The problem with many L. acidophilus bacteria is that they tend to die off quickly in your gut. A study found that DDS-1 was able to survive much longer: 8 days.
Researchers believe the DDS-1 strain of L. acidophilus is the most representative of a healthy intestinal tract. If I had to choose one probiotic strain to take, it would likely be DDS-1. Of course, I would much prefer to have several strains in addition to it to make it a well-rounded probiotic supplement. That’s exactly what I’ve created with my Complete Probiotics.
Lactobacillus plantarum
This beneficial probiotic strain is found in fermented vegetables and products like sauerkraut and kimchi. Lactobacillus plantarum is an outstanding reason to make your own fermented vegetables and to eat at least one serving daily.
good bacteria
Lactobacillus plantarum thrives in your stomach and can withstand the stomach’s acid environment, which makes it a very valuable good bacteria strain. While active in your gut, it helps support your immune health and a normal healthy inflammatory response.*
This single strain was the subject of a double blind, placebo-controlled study of 214 patients. At the end of four weeks, 78.1 percent of patients reported excellent or good results with relief of abdominal symptoms they were experiencing at the start of the study.
Lactobacillus plantarum is an outstanding probiotic strain for the majority of people as it helps support the health and integrity of your gut lining. Plus, it’s been shown to help digest protein and may prove valuable for individuals with occasional food intolerances. This strain also helps with the absorption of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential omega-3 fatty acids.*
Lactobacillus brevis
complete probiotics
Another super-strain that was discovered in the 1920s, Lactobacillus brevis also occurs naturally in your body and is found in human breast milk. It’s another strain of good bacteria provided by fermented vegetables, including carefully produced sauerkraut (not the typical commercial store-bought type).
Lactobacillus brevis is often found in low levels in the human gut, largely because of poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and other environmental factors. For that reason, it’s important to supplement, whether from properly prepared fermented vegetables (always my first choice) or a high-quality probiotic supplement such as my Complete Probiotics.
Potentially valuable for supporting digestive and immune health, Lactobacillus brevis is an important strain to look for when choosing a probiotic supplement with good bacteria.*
Bifidobacterium lactis
According to scientists, Bifidobacterium lactis is another “basic” good bacteria strain that’s found in healthy newborns and breast-fed infants. It’s typically found in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the intestines and colon, and in women’s vaginas.
breast feed
This strain supports digestive health and immune function, and cholesterol levels that are already in the normal range. It also plays an important role in helping your body absorb vitamins and minerals. Bifidobacterium lactis has shown an ability to help promote regular bowel movements.*
Bifidobacterium longum
Bifidobacterium longum may be one of the most significant probiotic strain found in the human gut. Studies show it supports a normal healthy digestive tract, inhibits the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, and supports immune function. This super-strain is thought to contribute to health in profound ways.*
Bifidobacterium longum is found in fermented foods, including sauerkraut and fermented vegetables. Much like DDS-1, this strain may help increase the intestine’s acidity by fermenting sugars into lactic acid. Plus it helps scavenge free radicals by acting as a potent antioxidant.*
Why Supplement With Probiotic Strains?
Now that you know which strains of probiotic bacterial strains I consider to be among the best, you may be wondering why it’s important to supplement with them regularly.
Many of us weren’t born with an ideal gut flora. And even if you were lucky enough to receive a healthy set of microbes from your mother, there are many factors at work, in childhood and adulthood, that continually threaten the balance between your beneficial bacteria and your less-than-beneficial bacterial strains:
Antibiotics
drinking antibiotics
Most antibiotics destroy all the bacteria in your gut, the good guys and the bad guys. Whether you just finished a course last week or took them years ago, your gut bacteria balance may still be compromised. This includes the antibiotics hidden in food, too, especially the factory-farmed meats and conventional dairy products you may be eating every day.
Heartburn pills
A British study on twins suggests that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), or the common over-the-counter and prescription pills taken for heartburn, can alter your gut flora and harm your good bacteria.
Fluoridated and chlorinated water
The chlorine in chlorinated tap water can potentially destroy both the pathogenic and the good, friendly bacteria in your gut. Ditto for fluoride. This may be related to the development of food allergies.
Sugar and fructose
fructose in fruits
One of the fastest ways to create an imbalance – and feed the bad guys – is to eat too much sugar and fructose. Eating too much sugar may also raise your risk of cognitive impairment and dementia because of its detrimental effects on your gut health.
Processed, refined foods
Processed foods, including pasteurized milk, can harm the beneficial probiotic strains in your gut. Eating a typical Western diet high in carbs and processed foods produces profoundly different gut bacteria than a diet high in vegetables and fiber.
Bioengineered foods, pesticides, and other agricultural chemicals
Certain genetically engineered foods and even some non-organic non-GMO foods like wheat can contain glyphosate, an agricultural herbicide that can target and destroy good gut bacteria. Conventionally raised animals are typically fed bioengineered grains such as GE corn.
NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
Certain popular over-the-counter painkillers can damage cell membranes and harm healthy gut bacteria.
NSAIDS
Stress
Stress affects your gut in a number of ways: it hinders the production of enzymes and absorption of nutrients, and reduces oxygen levels and blood flow. Plus, it alters your brain-gut connection (via the vagus nerve), and can impact the functioning of your entire GI tract, including the beneficial bacterial strains in your gastrointestinal tract.
Pollution
Airborne particulate matter from exhaust from cars, home furnaces, and industry, as well as livestock emissions, travel from your lungs to your intestines, and can alter your gut bacteria and your intestinal barrier. It can contaminate the food and water supply, leading to further injury of your gut bacteria.
Many of these things you can control, but some, such as air pollution, you have less control over. That’s why it makes sense to supplement and support your beneficial gut probiotics every day with good bacteria products.
Why take a chance when there’s a simple way to help make sure you get a plentiful supply of the good bacteria that are best for you? Take a high-quality probiotic supplement, like my Complete Probiotics, so you won’t have to miss out on these beneficial probiotic strains.
